Travel During Covid-19

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

Departing Canada Antigen and PCR Testing

Depending on the destination you'll need either an Rapid Antigen or PCR test. It's easy and quick. Sure your nose will itch and maybe feel a little violated, but the overall experience is simple.

Returning to Canada

Canada has stricter entry requirement that most countries. You'll need a PCR test within 72 hours of departure and to get the ticket number through the ArriveCAN. Follow the steps on the website bellow, keeping in mind you'll only be able to fill this in within 72 hours.

Travel Medical Insurance

Every traveller needs travel medical insurance. Getting sick abroad is not an if its a when. The last thing you need is to get sick and have to fork out $400,000 after your hospital stay. Government health insurance plans do have limits on the reimbursement of the emergency medical expenses incurred while in another province. For example, air and ground ambulance costs, emergency dental treatment and prescription drugs might not be covered outside your province of residence.

This is especially the case in the new normal that is travel during the Covid pandemic. Normally travel medical insurance is covered by most high end credit cards with the major banks. As an example TD has two main travel cards the First Class Travel Visa and the Aeroplan Visa. During regular travel you'd be covered for travel medical expenses but things have changed. If you examine the policies for the major Canadian banks, they won't cover expenses caused by covid-19.

To save you the reading of the policies, it depends if the country you're travelling to has an advisory. The Scotiabank policy even recommends the additional coverage I mention below. Before you go check this list:

As of October 2021 every country in the world has a travel advisory, so essentially you won't be covered unless you purchase additional coverage. Thankfully theres an affordable option.

55$/14 days coverage

Save yourself the headache. Get fully covered. Save the policy in your email and enjoy your trip with the piece of mind, that even if you get sick, you'll be covered. Get exploring!
